On Wednesday, August 17, the Ellis Davis Field House was converted into a “pop-up shop” to provide a special shopping experience for students at John Neely Bryan Elementary School and Boude Storey Middle School. The Dallas Mavericks Foundation provided giveaways and entertainment, along with 10 passes for 2 to in-season games. The Carter High School Marching Band, the Thomas Jefferson’s Modern Band, Mavs Dancers, the Mavs Drumline and representatives from the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders provided live music and entertainment during the registration process. Belk provided more than $50,000 in uniforms to outfit more than 1,200 students so they can start the school year with confidence and enthusiasm, as well as alleviate the burden of purchasing these new items for their parents who may be struggling to make ends meet. Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities was pleased to deepen the impact of this event with additional community partners who are committed to providing critical services to Dallas families in need. DECA Dental provided onsite dental screenings and is offering follow up services for all children for six months; TONI&GUY Hair Salon and San Francisco Barbershop of Dallas provided haircuts; and The Essilor Vision Foundation provided on-site screenings and new glasses for children in need. Albertsons/Tom Thumb served lunch to every family that attended, as well as sending each family home with a bag of healthy groceries and non-perishable food.

On Saturday, December 19th an estimated 50,000 Southern Dallas residents gathered at Fair Park for the 17th Annual Christmas in the Park hosted by the S.M. Wright Foundation. Some came for basic necessities like clothes and food while others came to find a toy or bike to help make a child’s Christmas wish come true. There was also a Coats for Kids section where brand new winter coats were handed out. Pat & Emmitt Smith, along with Reverend S.M. Wright II, kicked off this magical event with words of gratitude and a prayer to bless the day's event. Our Team 22 kids joined us to volunteer at registration and experience the joy of giving. Run by the S.M. Wright Foundation, a non-profit organization providing support and stability to inner-city underprivileged children and less fortunate families in the South Dallas/Fair Park community. The S. M. Wright Foundation helps many families in need, through its community program centers, the South Dallas Community Food Center, its South Dallas Community Resource Center, the Community Furniture Bank, the Dallas Financial Literacy and Tutoring Center, its Beds for Kids Center, as well as the Annual Christmas at Fair Park event. On Saturday, September 26, Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities partnered with DECA Dental to host a dental screening for over three hundred 3rd – 5th grade students at George H.W. Bush Elementary School in Addison. The school gym was converted into a “dental lab” for students where they were screened by dentists. Ongoing dental treatments will be available at three DECA Dental locations over the next six months, free of charge.
“Healthy teeth not only enable you to look and feel good, they make it possible to eat and speak properly. Teaching children about brushing and flossing today may help them avoid complicated dental procedures tomorrow.” said Emmitt Smith. “We are thrilled to be working with DECA Dental to provide hundreds of children with a winning smile and the gift of good dental health as they start a new school year.”
Parents were able to visit with DECA Dental staff about their children oral health while the children played games, had their faces painted out in the courtyard and enjoyed fresh fruit and food provided by Albertson's. Inside, the DECA Dental staff put on performances for the kids to illustrate the importance of brushing and flossing and to answer questions from the kids themselves about how to best care for their teeth.
"DECA Dental is a local dental company that believes in giving back to the surrounding communities, here in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. We truly believe that children deserve the opportunity to achieve their own goals in life. DECA wants to give that child the first chance to have the beautiful smile they deserve. This is a golden step in achieving the self confidence the child needs to achieve their goals and be successful in school and life," Dr. Sulman Ahmed, D.M.D. CEO/Founder.
